The conference was co-organized by the Center on Global Economic Governance (CGEG) and the Program for Economic Research (PER), with support from Columbia University Economics Department, Institute for Social and Economic Research and Policy (ISERP), School of International and Public Affairs, Law School, and Business School. SIOE’s President-elect W. Bentley MacLeod, Sami Mnaymneh Professor of Economics and Professor of International and Public Affairs at Columbia and CGEG Faculty Associate, chaired the SIOE program committee and hosted the three day event.
Matthew O. Jackson, a leading economist from Stanford University working on the economics of networks -- a subject of growing importance in an increasingly interconnected world -- delivered the keynote talk on Friday, June 23rd. Duncan Watts, a sociologist at Microsoft Research and Cornell University doing innovative work on inequality and information dynamics in social networks, delivered the keynote talk on Saturday, June 24th. Watts presented an overview of his empirical research on social networks, offering keen insight into the evolution of society's social media usage and the implications for modern institutions and social organization. The conference concluded with a special keynote panel on Sunday, June 25th featuring Oliver Hart (Harvard University) and Bengt Holmström (MIT), two scholars of organizational economics and winners of the 2016 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences. Francine Lafontaine (University of Michigan) and Robert Gibbons (MIT), senior scholars in the field, further engaged with Hart and Holmström on the implications of their work for the study of institutional and organizational economics and to explore areas of promising future research.
