Crypto assets are booming. Advertised as a unique solution that will render fiat currency obsolete, they are considered by many to be the new digital gold. But just like the settlers who sought to get rich quick by pushing the frontier to the American West, investors are stepping into the digital Wild West when they invest in crypto assets. Fabio Panetta, Member of the European Central Bank Executive Board, will explain why crypto-assets are not only speculative and high-risk investments, but raise a host of public policy and financial stability concerns. Bringing crypto assets safely into the regulatory perimeter would allow to promote innovation, whilst avoiding their widespread use for illicit activities and setting the stage for a new bubble.
