The Initiative on Central Banking and Financial Policy, the Center on Global Economic Governance, the MPA in Economic Policy Management, and Columbia Law School will welcome Paul Tucker for a discussion of his book, Global Discord: Values and Power in a Fractured World Order (Princeton University Press, 2022).
The contest between the West and China might well last a century or more, severely challenging the international economic and legal system. An unfamiliar combination of security risks and heavy economic interdependence challenges the standard scholarly menu offered by International Relations. In Global Discord, Paul Tucker, turning to David Hume, lays out principles for a sustainable system of international cooperation that combines realism with sensitivity to our deep political values. Drawing on three decades as a policy maker, Tucker applies these principles to the role of the dollar, the trade and investment regimes, and the financial system.

Author Biography: Sir Paul Tucker is a research fellow at the Mossavar-Rahmani Center for Business and Government at the Harvard Kennedy School, and author of Global Discord (Princeton University Press, 2022) and Unelected Power (PUP, 2018). His other activities include being a senior fellow at the Center for European Studies at Harvard University; president of the UK’s National Institute for Economic and Social Research; research fellow at UCL’s political science department; a director at Swiss Re; and a Governor of the Ditchley Foundation. He was a central banker for over thirty years at the Bank of England and Basel, where he was a member of the board of the Bank for International Settlements and chaired a number of the international standard setters. He chaired the Systemic Risk Council from 2016 to mid-2021.
